Over the past 25 years, PROTECTOSIL® has been protecting buildings from erosion of water, salt, pollutants, dust, oil and exhaust particles. Like wearing a waterproof jacket, PROTECTOSIL® blocks the ingress of moisture and creates a dry, healthy environment inside of the building materials. After the surfaces of building materials such as concrete, sandstone, granite and plaster are treated with PROTECTOSIL®, one can easily remove mold, algae, moss and even graffiti on them, without leaving any traces.
Bright as new, a lasting companion The Phoenix International Media Center is located in the southwest corner of Beijing Chaoyang Park. Famed for its unique shape of a “Mobius magic ring”, it has become another landmark in Beijing in the Post-Olympic era. Entering into the building, one can see countless crisscrossing steel curves revealing a stunningly exquisite design, while the white curtain walls interspersed in the curves increase the transparency and elegance of the whole building. The GRC curtain walls, i.e. the glass fiber reinforced concrete walls, are advanced concrete products widely loved by master designers for their simple and natural styles. However, all concrete products, because of their hydrophilic and lipophilic nature, are vulnerable to acid rain, dust and microbial erosion in the nature. What’s more, unintentionally spilled coffee or cola stains can also make the pure white walls no longer clean. In March 2013, all GRC curtain walls in the Phoenix International Media Center were sprayed with Evonik’s dirt-resistant, easy-to-clean protective agent Protectosil® SC60. With the protection of Protectosil ®, the GRC walls will long be kept clean and white. In fact, Evonik’s Protectosil® products can meet the demanding requirements of architects on the building surfaces, as well as their fantasy of achieving the texture of concrete. A one-time thorough spray after building completion will help remove all stains, water marks and microbes, and unintentional drips of coffee and oil will slide easily down from the wall due to gravity. Anti-graffiti, clean without leaving marks The Court of Final Appeal located in Central, Hong Kong is the highest appellate court of the HKSAR. The building was built in 1912 featuring a neo-classical style complemented by the architectural features of the Far East. The blindfolded goddess Themis in the building - a classic image in the TVB dramas – also makes the Court of Final Appeal one of the top tourist attractions in Hong Kong. The more charming, prominent and eye-catching a building is, the more it appeals to the graffiti artists. Therefore the building's exterior walls were “patronized” by graffiti artists more and more frequently. Also, the longer graffiti stay on the building surface, the more followers it will draw. This was the case until Evonik’s Protectosil ANTIGRAFFITI® comes into play. Considering that graffiti artists usually work out in the night, the protection job must be done fast, efficiently and in low cost. With Protectosil ANTIGRAFFITI®, neither aqueous or solvent-based paint nor marker would easily attach to the outer wall surfaces, but tend to fall off the walls. As a result, the graffiti artists would have to spend three times more than usual paint and time even for drawing a slightly clear “Hi!”. That is efinitely frustrating for those artists. More importantly, when the wall is specially protected with Protectosil ®, the pigment will not be able to enter into the building materials or penetrate into the interior of the substrate. Any graffiti, whether a painting, slogan, or short signature left on the wall, will be easily removed and cleaned. Breathe freely with invisible protection Unlike ordinary film-forming coating that simply covers and seals the building surface, Protectosil® allows water vapor to escape, so that the building can breathe and building materials are effectively protected. It is worth mentioning that one could simply not identify the Protectosil® traces on building surface with naked eyes, so that the style and texture of concrete can be intact. The Phoenix International Media Center, the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal… These are only some of the many well-known projects Evonik’s Protectosil® has been a part of. Our success might not be visible to the public, but these cases all have one thing in common: Protectosil® not only meets the challenges of modern innovative architecture, but also brings life to the protection of historic buildings!
