High innovative capability is vital for Evonik as a world leader in specialty chemicals. It drives profitable growth and strengthens our position as a market and technology leader. Alongside our applications technology laboratories at several sites, the R&D center in Shanghai-Xinzhuang plays a key role in Evonik’s global R&D strategy.
The R&D center was inaugurated in 2004, with further expansions in 2007 and 2009. The company has just completed its third expansion at the end of October, 2013, with aims to develop product applications and provide technology service for customers throughout Greater China and Asia. A total investment of €23 million, the new five-storey R&D buildinghousese around 50 standard labs, conference facilities and a show room demonstrating Evonik’s diversified products and solutions.
The new R&D building is also the first LEED* (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certified building for Evonik worldwide.
The rapidly increasing demand for R&D facilities in Shanghai reflects Evonik’s strong focus on ‘innovation in China for China’, which is one of the key success factors for its growth in Asia, especially in the Greater China region. Creating innovative products and solutions that satisfy changing customer needs is at the core of Evonik’s business. With the expansion, Evonik is strengthening the local R&D capacity by expanding its activities from technical service to product development.
In addition, Evonik has been stepping up R&D in the Asian growth markets for years, aiming to help strengthen the competitiveness of our Asian customers through research and applications technology geared specifically to local needs. For example, with the establishment of a biotech center and an analytic center in the new R&D building, Evonik endeavors to strengthen its basic research competency in the region. The biotech center is responsible for the evaluation of technologies, research cooperation with Chinese partners, technology scale-up and commercialization for the Chinese market.
In 2012, Evonik announced the opening of its Advanced Project House (APH) “Light & Electronics” in Taiwan, located in the Industrial Technology Research Institute in Hsinchu. This is also the first project house outside of Germany. The APH focus on the development of products and technologies for lighting, displays, touch panel, photovoltaic, LEDs and functional coatings. The opening of the APH is a new cornerstone for Evonik entering into new markets and globalization of R&D.
