2018 Olympic Winter Games: PLEXIGLAS® keeps the German House warm

Some 400 m² of PLEXIGLAS® will shield athletes and visitors from cold and UV radiation in the German House during the Olympic Winter Games.

German Sports Marketing, in collaboration with the architect firm AS+P, relied on Evonik's brand acrylic glass for the design of the spacious entrance area.

In the entrance area, translucent multi-skin sheets made of PLEXIGLAS® Heatstop and illuminated from the inside create a wintry atmosphere, while offering protection against rain, wind, and snow.

“We are very excited that our product will help make athletes and visitors in the German House feel comfortable and enjoy their time here,” says Bernd Petri, who is responsible for the roofing market segment within the Acrylic Products Business Line of Evonik Performance Materials GmbH.

Top product for top performance

In addition to cutting a good figure in Pyeongchang, PLEXIGLAS® Heatstop is an ideal, transparent glazing material for light-suffused carports, winter gardens, and roof terraces or for façade panels. The highly weather-resistant sheets made of impact-modified acrylic glass are available in a solid variety as well as in a corrugated and multi-skin version, optionally with an anti-algae application (AAA).

The brand acrylic glass stands out for its durability and light permeability. Depending on the type and design, new colorless PLEXIGLAS® has a light transmission of up to 92%, which decreases by only 2–8% even after 30 years.

Inspiration for architecture and construction

The brand acrylic glass has combined design and functionality in architectural applications for over 80 years. For example, it set new standards in the tented roof design of the Olympic Stadium in Munich in the early 1970s. Another unique application is the façade of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Nigeria, which was covered with a total of 6,900 sheets of PLEXIGLAS® Satinice in 2014. The virtually limitless color and shape variety of PLEXIGLAS® inspires architects around the world and offers them the option to realize their ideas.
