2020 German Innovation Award in Gold goes to Evonik for CALOSTAT® Sandwich
- CALOSTAT® Sandwich wins in the Building & Elements category
- Innovative combination of different materials
- New insulating panel is slim, non-combustible, and recyclable
The German Innovation Award recognizes products and solutions across industries that stand out especially for their focus on users and the value they add relative to previous solutions. The high-profile members of this year’s jury were impressed by CALOSTAT® Sandwich, giving it top honors in the “Excellence in Business to Business - Building & Elements” category.
Evonik has developed novel insulating panels based on high-performance CALOSTAT®, a mineral-based, non-combustible, recyclable material. New CALOSTAT® Sandwich greatly expands applications for exceptionally slim, safe, highly sustainable thermal insulation. The product is particularly suitable for use as an insulating panel in ventilated curtain walls, double-shell masonry, or in other tight spots such as dormers, behind downspouts or behind boxes for roller shutters and blinds. As insulation, the material helps save space and opens up areas that can be sold or rented as living space. When used in renovation projects for structures such as historic brick buildings, it often represents the only way of retaining a structure’s architectural heritage, as it allows builders to make optimum use of the limited space for the crucial insulation. The purely mechanical joining methods used make recycling easy.
“New CALOSTAT® Sandwich from Evonik combines the properties of different skin materials with a core made of high-performance CALOSTAT® insulation—an innovative material in its own right. Despite how thin they are, these panels have outstanding thermal insulating properties and are non-combustible. In addition, the layers are joined mechanically, making them very easy to separate and recycle later on. A fantastic insulating product that expands the options available to architects while also protecting the environment,” the jury wrote, explaining its decision.
“The entire CALOSTAT® team is very happy with our gold prize at the German Innovation Awards,” says Dr. Bettina Gerharz-Kalte, who leads Evonik’s Thermal Insulation Growth Field. “CALOSTAT® is a young product that has now become successfully established on the market. We’re all working very hard to continue developing the portfolio in keeping with customer demands. We always have new solutions to offer for a growing number of insulation and fire-protection applications. For us, this award represents both recognition and inspiration.”
The German Innovation Award was initiated by the Rat für Formgebung (German Design Council), which also presents it. Created by the German Parliament and funded by German industry, the Design Council supports companies’ efforts to gain a competitive edge. Competitions held by the Design Council have recognized internationally prominent achievements in design, branding, and innovation since 1953.
