Evonik Coating Additives launches first mass balanced products for coatings and inks

  • High-performance, sustainable coatings: Reduced carbon footprint without sacrificing performance.
  • Bio-attributed ISCC certified material: Traceable and credible sustainable sourcing.
  • Versatile wetting and defoaming: Solutions for diverse coating and inks applications.
  • Eco-label and food contact compliant: Formulate with confidence.

Essen, Germany. Evonik Coating Additives introduces its first two mass balanced products, TEGO® Wet 270 eCO and TEGO® Foamex 812 eCO, providing coating and ink formulators with the same high-performing defoamer and wetting agent properties they expect, but with a reduced carbon footprint.

The raw materials used to produce these additives – both organic and inorganic – have the greatest impact on the final product's carbon footprint. By investing in ISCC certified raw materials, Evonik Coating Additives has significantly reduced that footprint. The newly implemented mass balance approach allows for the allocation of bio-attributed or recycled-attributed feedstock to specific products, providing a traceable and credible way to reduce fossil carbon use in coatings.

“By using ISCC certified raw materials, we are contributing to the replacement of virgin fossil resources by renewable feedstocks. This allows us to support our customers in the reduction of their Scope 3 upstream emissions” says Tim-Frederic Sloot, Head of Sustainability at Evonik Coating Additives, who led the development of the first mass balanced products.

ISCC PLUS certification ensures transparency

The ISCC PLUS certification of the mass balance approach ensures that sales align with the purchased sustainable raw materials, empowering customers to create more sustainable product formulations.

The initial mass balanced product portfolio includes TEGO® Wet 270 eCO, a substrate wetting agent, and TEGO® Foamex 812 eCO, a versatile defoamer. The “eCO" suffix signifies “eliminate CO2.”

Superior Wetting with 40% bio carbon (mass balance)

TEGO® Wet 270 eCO is a highly active and broadly applicable substrate wetting agent with over 40% bio carbon (mass balance). It offers excellent wetting properties, effective crater prevention, and is suitable for a wide range of coating applications, including waterborne, solventborne, and radiation-curing coatings. Its sustainability benefits include a lower product carbon footprint and compliance with key food contact regulations.

Effective Defoaming with over 60% bio carbon (mass balance)

TEGO® Foamex 812 eCO boasts over 60% bio carbon (mass balance) and serves as an effective and universal grinding stage defoamer. Suitable for clear and pigmented formulations, it is effective against both micro and macro foam. This product is ideal for eco-label compliant formulations and provides broad food contact compliance, making it a sustainable choice for various coating technologies.

These two products for foam control and wetting agents are just the beginning. Evonik Coating Additives plans to expand its mass-balanced additive product portfolio, providing customers with next-generation solutions that exceed typical sustainability standards while maintaining the same high performance.

Evonik's Coating Additives business offers a wide range of specialty additives for coatings and printing inks. With decades of experience, the business develops products for various coatings markets, including decorative coatings, industrial coatings, automotive coatings, and printing inks.
