  • Cooperation agreements signed with multiple companies to jointly explore new development opportunities

The fifth China International Import Expo (CIIE) commenced in Shanghai on Nov. 4th, 2022. As one of the world leaders in special chemicals, Evonik participates in the CIIE with the theme of “Driving sustainable development to co-create a green future”. By showcasing a series of innovative, eco-friendly and sustainable solutions tailed for local market needs, the company aims to support China’s pledge to achieve carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. During the event, Evonik released “Evonik Sustainability Practices in China” for the first time, introducing its latest achievements in sustainable development in China.

“Evonik attended the first CIIE in 2018. Benefiting from the spillover effect of the expo, we have opened a new chapter in our business development in China. This year, we have again noticed increasing market demand for innovative products and technologies as well as sustainable solutions,” said Fuliang Xia, president of Evonik Greater China. “We will continue to drive green transformation within the company and contribute to the innovative and low-carbon development of the Chinese industries.”

Over ten products make their debut, contributing to the upgrade of multiple industries

At CIIE 2022, Evonik launched 18 innovative products and sustainable solutions, covering various application areas such as automobiles, consumer goods, and urban construction. Six of these innovations are making their global debut, three for Asian debut, and seven for China debut. Through launch of the products, Evonik aims to contribute to the sustainable development in China.

In the field of transportation, Evonik presented all-round material solutions for electric vehicles, and released a number of new products for lithium-ion battery applications, three of which were launched for the first time in the world. Among them, the lithium-ion battery additives Nourybond® 392 and TEGO® Surten E 411/412 improve the safety and durability of lithium-ion batteries. To further enhance its service and innovation capabilities, Evonik has opened its first global lithium-ion battery center in Shanghai recently. The center combines the expertise on innovations for cathode, anode and separator materials and electrode preparation technologies and develops customized solutions for the rapidly growing lithium-ion battery industry.

In the field of healthcare, Evonik showcased three new products for the first time in China which are well-suited for medical applications, pharmaceuticals, cell culture, etc. Among them, biocellic+ is a natural, fermentation-based renewable biopolymer of highly pure cellulose. This product features a very fine and strong fiber network as well as unique material properties, and can be used for wound care products and implants.

In the field of consumer goods, Evonik released eight new products, which can be applied in consumer goods, cars, shoes, home decoration and other fields. Among these products, TROGAMID® eCO is a high-purity microcrystalline high-performance polyamide specially optimized for the optics industry. Launched in China for the first time, the material can be used in the production of high-end lenses for sunglasses. It is made of biological recyclable raw materials and partially replaces fossil materials. What is more, only renewable energy is used in the production of the granules. This results in a 50 percent reduction in the footprint of the climate gas carbon dioxide compared to the petrochemical products.

First China sustainability report released to create green synergy among industries

Evonik releases its first local sustainability report to demonstrate its latest local sustainable practices during the CIIE. Meanwhile, the company is also seeking new opportunities for collaborating with local partners to drive low-carbon development in China.

The report highlights the company’s multiple resource-saving and eco-friendly products and solutions for sectors such as transportation, green manufacturing, renewable energy, construction, agriculture, healthcare, and consumer goods. In the field of wind power, for example, the isophorone diamine (IPDA) and fumed silica enables wind turbine blades with the expected strength and toughness, while the NUFLUX™ technology extends the maintenance cycle of wind turbine gear oil. Relevant products have been adopted by major wind power equipment manufacturers. In the field of animal husbandry, Evonik has been cooperating with over ten domestic companies to promote its low crude protein diet concept. The probiotics GutCare® helps to improve animal performance while refrains from using growth-enhancing antibiotics in poultry and pigs. So far, over a dozen of feed producers in China have adopted this gut health solution.

Evonik plans to reduce 25% of its carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality by 2050. To this end, the company is taking multiple actions to reduce its carbon footprint in production. A number of pilot projects are underway in China, including digital energy management system, Greenhouse Gas Reduction Assessment Program and the application of renewable electricity. In September, Evonik also participated in the first inter-provincial green power trading of East China Power Grid.

In addition, Evonik joins hands with partners to improve the transparency and sustainability of the chemical value chain. For example, as a founding member of Together for Sustainability (TfS) initiatives of the chemical industry, the company actively promotes the local implementation of TfS initiatives to improve the sustainability performance of local suppliers. In September, Evonik signed the new TfS Guideline for Product Carbon Footprint, a new global guidance for calculating Product Carbon Footprints (PCFs) in the chemical industry and beyond.

Partnering with multiple companies to explore innovative cooperation models

Benefiting from CIIE's platform effect, Evonik has entered into strategic partnerships with multiple companies during the CIIE, including Sinochem Zhejiang Membrane Industry Development Co., Ltd., Shanghai OPM Biosciences Co., Ltd., Shandong Hi-speed Group, among others. Evonik will work with the partners to provide more innovative and sustainable solutions for green manufacturing, infrastructure, healthcare, biopharmaceutical, personal care and other applications.

In particular, Evonik and Sinochem (Zhejiang) Membrane Industry Development Co., Ltd. will jointly develop comprehensive solution in carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technology for the manufacturing industry. Combining Evonik’s gas separation membrane SEPURAN® with the “closed loop ecosystem of carbon peak and neutrality” developed by Sinochem Membrane, the two companies will jointly carry out carbon dioxide capture and circular economy projects. The first application is the cement industry. Leveraging on the respective strength of the two companies, the partnership aims to speed up the development of low-carbon and circular economy in China.

The fifth CIIE is taking place at the National Exhibition and Convention Center. Visit Evonik booth (3B1-04 - Hall 3) or follow Evonik on WeChat for more information.
