With Evonik’s DEGAROUTE® road marking system, colorful zebra crossings enhance road safety in Chongqing

In order to promote road safety, Evonik Industries sponsored red and white, anti-slip zebra crossings in front of Li Yuan Primary School, Jiangnan Primary School and Renhejie Primary School in Chongqing, China this month.

“Evonik is aiming to contribute to the society and promote China’s road safety by providing high quality and durability road marking technology.” Mr. Peter Reinhard, Business Director Road Marking, the Coating & Adhesive Resins Business Line, Evonik industries said. A ceremony was held in Li Yuan Primary Schoolin Chongqing on October 25, signaling the inauguration of the crossing. Representatives from the school, Municipal Party Committee Propaganda Department of Chongqing, Chongqing Traffic Police department, Chongqing Public Security Bureau and Chongqing board of Education attended the ceremony and highly recognized Evonik’s initiative.

The total area of zebra crossings using Evonik’s DEGAROUTE®, a high-performance and durable cold plastic, two-component methyl methacrylate (MMA) road marking system reaches 400 square meters, including 4 crosswalks in front of 3 schools. They are all located in the intersections where busy traffic causes great potential safety hazard to children. The vivid zebra crossing creates a more noticeable contrast of the marking on the road. It will guide students, pedestrians, cyclists, streetcars and buses more smoothly and safely through the school zone.

The move is part of Evonik’s latest corporate responsibility activities in China in response to the United Nation’s “Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020”, a campaign to stabilize and reduce road deaths.
Together with its partners, Evonik has planned to select Futher cities in China, where it will voluntarily lay colored crosswalk around campuses of primary and secondary schools. In 2011, Evonik marked zebra crossing in front of the Gong Cheng Lu Primary School in the city of Wuzhou in Guangxi.

About “Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020”
Each year nearly 1.3 million people die in road traffic collisions - more than 3,000 deaths each day - and more than half of these victims aren’t vehicle drivers or passengers. 20 to 50 million people sustain non-fatal injuries from crashes. These injuries are important causes of disability worldwide. In March 2010, United Nation resolution on improving global road safety called on “Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020”. On May 11, 2011, the action was formally launched. The overall objective of the action is to stabilize and then reduce the forecasted mortality of global road fatalities by 2020.
